GCE LEARNING EXPERIENCES OF 2011

Through the launch of GCE Learning Experience (GCELE), Centennial College will demonstrate its commitment to student participation in global citizenship learning by providing diverse opportunities for our students. GCE Learning Experience (GCELE) aims to prepare students to be leaders of positive social change in our intricately connected world.

The Peru Experience

June 10th to June 26th, 2011
The Peru Experience will provide students in specific Community Services programs an opportunity to develop global citizenship competencies. Students participating in the project will be working with a small nonprofit organization called Learning for Hope, in rural communities near Cusco, Peru. Projects of this initiative include opportunities to make physical improvements to schools, teach pre-planned lessons and assist in developing a small sustainable guinea pig farming coop.

Students will take part in pre-departure workshops and other related activities. This project is open to students in the following programs of the School of Community and Health Studies:
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Child and Youth Worker
  • Social Service worker
  • Developmental Service Worker
  • Recreation and Leisure Services
  • Foundation Studies
  • Police Foundations Community
  • Justice Services
Amazon, Peru Experienc-Protect our planet and inspire change
March 5 to 19, 2011
Impact environmental sustainability by taking a stand for rainforest conservation with Centennial College.Centennial College invites you to participate in our Amazon Experience, a learning opportunity that gets students working a network of researchers from Operation Wallacea, an organization which implements biodiversity research programmes across the world, to learn about sustainable practices.

Environmentally conscious students will travel abroad into the heart of the Amazon Basin, in Peru, to assist in developing conservation research and strategies by studying and collecting data on a variety of wildlife, including turtles, exploited mammals and birds, dolphins, manatees and primates at the Pacaya Samiria National Park. This expedition will also help assist students acquire global skills through building and maintaining international partnerships.

Dominican Republic Experience
March 5 to 19, 2011
Centennial College invites you to participate in Teach to Learn, a project empowering youth and their families in Cabarete, Dominican Republic through community and educational development initiatives in efforts to help break the cycle of poverty.
Your involvement in Teach to Learn will allow you to travel aboard as a Centennial College ambassador where you will work with community-based not-for-profit organizations such as the DREAM Project, POR AMOR Community Enhancement Initiatives and Tres Mariposas Montessori Centre to deliver quality educational workshops in your field of study, along with providing mentorship.

This initiative is in its second year and is part of the International Service Learning Project hosted by Centennial’s Global Citizenship and Equity Learning Experience.Your creativity, determination and passion are the key to social change.

Community Health, Dominican Republic Experience
March 5 to 19, 2011
Centennial College invites you to participate in the School of Community and Health Studies (SCHS) Health Care in the Dominican Republic Project, a project helping youth and their families obtain medical assistance in effort to provide them with the medical attention they desperately need.

Your involvement in the Health Care in the Dominican Republic Project will allow you to travel abroad as a Centennial College ambassador where you will work in collaboration with Island Impact, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing medical and construction assistance to the people of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

You will have the opportunity to help create education materials and workshops in health promotions, along with working in a three day service learning initiative with not-for-profit groups such as POR AMOR and Tres Mariposas Montessori Centre.
